Glitter Gal – Navy I Will Navy I Won’t, Big Smoke, and Gloss Boss topcoat

Today I have swatches and reviews of a couple of Glitter Gal’s new releases to show you! For those who don’t know, they’ve just released two new collections of creme shades, a new holo, two new holo topcoats, and a colour-enhancing high-gloss topcoat!

Here are the polishes that I am reviewing today – Big Smoke, a medium-dark grey creme, the new colour-enhancing topcoat Gloss Boss, and the new blue holo called Navy I Will, Navy I Won’t.

Let me start with the grey creme, Big Smoke. Two coats, no topcoat, in the first photo. The formula was smooth and thinner than some creme formulas, but not too thin.

Then I added a layer of Gloss Boss topcoat. Super shiny, and dried quickly!

Nice, simple deep grey! The previous photos were with flash. Here’s one under the Ott lite without flash:

And now, the new holo, Navy I Will, Navy I Won’t! I’ve gotta say, the colour is great and the name is great, but I wouldn’t have put the two together! It’s a medium, saturated/almost bright blue, not a navy.

I used two coats; the formula was great. These first two photos are without topcoat, the above with flash and below with just the Ott lite. Unfortunately I wasn’t able to photograph it in sunlight, since, well, it’s the darkest month of the year, here!

There is a very slight teal-leaning metallic shimmer to the surface of the polish, when the light shines on it, as you can see in some of the photos.

Gloss Boss is said to enhance holographic polish, rather than dull the effect like some topcoats tend to do. The rest of the photos include one layer of Gloss Boss, and as you can see the holo is still obvious and the polish is a lot glossier. Again, the above photo is with flash and the following is under the Ott lite.

I’ll have to round up all the topcoats I have at some point to do a comparison on how they each affect holographic polishes!

Pretty and Polished Sundown

Indie brand Pretty and Polish has a number of thermal colour-changing polishes; this one is Sundown, released earlier this year. All these photos are taken with flash. The second one is also near a window so it appears lighter.

In its cool/room temperature state, Sundown is a light apricot orange colour, with matte hex glitters in orangey yellow, pink and pale yellow.

In its warm state, the base turns to a soft golden pastel yellow, and the golden shimmer in the base becomes more apparent.

Yep, my fingers are extra red in that warm photo, due to dipping them in hot water!

Here is Sundown in a transition state, I love it! When I was in a warm location (i.e. not my cold apartment haha) I would sometimes find that it would stay in a state of yellow nail bed and orange tips. 😀

These photos show three coats of the polish, plus top coat. You could probably get away with two coats but I didn’t want to take chances that it would end up appearing streaky when warm, since the warm colour is notably paler than the cool colour! I found the polish easy to apply; I did a little bit of “placement” of the glitter, but not too much. The formula is fairly thick, as most thermals are due to the nature of the colour changing pigment. All in all, a great polish!!

Kunimitsu Orange Tabby

I have another Kunimitsu Nail Potions swatch to show you today!

This is Orange Tabby, a light orange creme with small orange bar glitter and several sizes of orange hex glitter.

On my index finger, I layered it in two coats over Pretty and Polished Crush, because I thought it was going to be sheer, but I was wrong! The other nails show three coats of Orange Tabby by itself.

I did have to do some shaking between coats and searching with the brush to get the amount of glitter I wanted out of the bottle. Not a high price to pay for an adorable orange polish!

I didn’t include my pinkie in the first few photos because I had done a layering experiment there too, and wasn’t really thrilled with how it turned out. I did two coats of Orange Tabby over Pretty Serious Seasonal Sunset, and while the combo isn’t bad, I don’t really like it next to the other nails! But anyway here it is in the last few photos.

Now, obviously, a post about a polish named Orange Tabby needs some orange tabbies! 😉

This is Wu. He was just little in this photo from right after we adopted him. He has three legs (and gets around just fine).

And this big ball of orange fur is Possum! I took her in off the streets of Montreal where she’d been living for a month after being abandoned.

More random old stuff!

Nubar Pink Flame, under artificial light:

Comparison: left to right, Finger Paints Catwalk Queen, Butter London Bumster (middle and ring fingers), Misa Hot Couture. The Butter London and Finger Paints polishes are quite close, Finger Paints just has slightly more orange, while the Misa is noticeably darker.

I’ll admit, while I ended up really liking Pepe’s Purple Passion, I mainly wanted it for the name, because of this handsome guy whose name is Pepe. Although we usually call him Tex. 🙂

My apologies for the lack of posts! Things have just been super busy lately! So I thought I’d post another group of photos from several years ago that I just never got around to posting and don’t necessarily have the info on number of coats, formula etc. anymore.

OPI Fiercely Fiona with Nicole by OPI Brilliant Idea on the accent finger.

A frankenpolish that I call Firecracker. The ingredients for this are Martha Stewart glitter in fire opal (which does bleed colour into the base, but not too much) and some of the LA Girl Glitter Addict polishes in orange, fuchsia, and red.

OPI Absolutely Alice with half moons in Nubar Night Sparkle.

OPI and Apple Pie, a classic “ugly” shade, under the Ott Lite.

Jordana Wild Shore and Yellow Madness

I’m really liking textured polishes, but at first I wasn’t too sure about the ones that aren’t glittery and sparkly. I think they’ve grown on me, though!

These two are by Jordana, which is made by the same company that makes Milani. These seem to be the exact same polishes as Milani’s Texture Creams, only they were a couple dollars cheaper so I got these instead!

I started out with Wild Shore, a teal green creme with texture. I can’t remember whether I did two or three coats, and I don’t seem to have written it down. I do remember having a little trouble with application, as I found these really need thin coats in order to get the best finish (so I’m thinking I probably ended up doing three thin coats), and at first I was making my coats too thick. Then I was trying to find the right balance between thin coats but having enough polish on the brush.

But I’m really happy with the way it turned out! I then sponged on a gradient using Jordana Yellow Madness along with Wild Shore.

I love the combination of yellow and turquoise! And the sponging really brings out the texture of these polishes, since the sponging technique leaves less polish on top of the texture particles. Looks really sugary and crystalline!

LA Colors Illusion and Wisteria

I’ve got a quick post for you today featuring two LA Colors polishes.

Illusion is a periwinkle blue creme with a slightly jellyish quality to it, and the accent colour, Wisteria, is a warm lilac creme with hidden shimmer. Two coats each plus topcoat, and I applied dots of Illusion to the accent nail using a dotting tool.

China Glaze Sun of a Peach and comparisons

Here’s another neon from the China Glaze Sunsational collection!

Sun of a Peach is a neon pastel peach, and a great unique colour! I like the name too, haha.

The formula is a bit difficult to work with, but not really worse than other neons or pastels.

I used three coats to even everything out. The photos include base coat and top coat.

I think the colour is certainly worth putting up with the neon formula. With flash:

And here is a nail wheel comparison with other peaches, neon and non-neon, and some that lean more towards coral. The photo was taken with flash, but somehow the polishes still look a bit darker than they do in real life. So, word of warning that these aren’t colour accurate, but give a good indication of the relative differences in these polishes!

None of these are close to Sun of a Peach; the most similar are Kleancolor Mango which is darker and much less bright, and oldie NYX Amazon which is a translucent jelly with iridescent glitter, however. But as you can see there are some dupes and near-dupes among the other polishes – notably China Glaze Peachy Keen and Misa Shake it to the Samba which are basically identical. Cult Nails Scandalous is also similar to OPI Apricotcha Cheating, and Kleancolor Pastel Orange to Illamasqua Purity, but those pairs aren’t close enough to be dupes.

China Glaze Flip Flop Fantasy and Sun Worshipper

More neons! This is a fun manicure I did using two older China Glaze neons, Flip Flop Fantasy and Sun Worshipper.

Sun Worshipper is a neon yellow-orange, and Flip Flop Fantasy a neon pink-coral. Three coats each, plus top coat (they dry semi-matte, like most neons do).

The formula on these is kind of streaky, but no worse than most other neons in my opinion. The result is certainly worth waiting a couple minutes between coats to prevent dragging. Top coat also helps smooth out the finish.

Apparently Flip Flop Fantasy has recently been reformulated, and the newer version is more peach-coral. I’m going to have to check that out next time I’m in Sally Beauty, since I love peach!! 🙂

China Glaze Neon & On & On, Shell-o, and neon pink comparisons!

China Glaze Neon & On & On and Shell-o are from their recent Sunsational collection of neons. Since they’re both in the pink-coral family, I thought I’d post them together along with nail wheel swatches of all the neon pinks I own!

Shell-o is a neon coral pink jelly. I used three coats over ridge filler for the swatches. I didn’t have problems with application for this one.

It dries somewhere between glossy and matte, and these photos do not include top coat.

In the shade:

Neon & On & On is a warm/coral leaning pastel neon pink creme. I used three coats over ridge filler, plus top coat.

The formula on this one was difficult to work with. It helps to not go over the same spot twice while applying each coat.

It dries very quickly, so that’s a plus. The polish dries matte, and a little lumpy before topcoat due to the thick and quick-drying formula. But top coat really helps to even it out. Next time I think I’ll try adding thinner to this one.
